Chapter 6: Wooden Statue

Lily and Rosaleen have pancakes for breakfast with August, her sisters and another visitor before the church service began.

In the church service August tells a story about how a wooden figure motivated a black person to fight for their rights. The wooden figure in fact, was right up near the altar, which was of Mother Mary with an exposed heart. After the story was concluded everyone was allowed to touch the statue if they wanted to. As Lily tried to touch the figure, the music ceased, and she suddenly faints. Fortunately she wasn't harmed.

At the end of the day (and the chapter), Lily and her housemates hear a news report about the Ranger Seven, a space shuttle that takes photos, crashed into the moon's surface.
