Structure HOME
The structure of the novel is set in chapters and page numbers. The novel is not in chronological order as there are several flash backs that lily (the main character) refers to about her childhood and the mother she never knew. These appear throughout the novel, particularly in the first few chapters when the story is beginning to unfold. Because Lily is telling the story from her point of view, it is written in first person. It is interesting how before each chapter begins, there is a quote about bees which is relevant to the chapter and life in general.

These quotes give the reader an overview and set up the chapter. It is important to refer to these quotes before and after reading the chapter to see the relevance of them. For example the first chapter begins with a quote from Man and Insects, “The queen, for her part, is the unifying force of the community; if she is removed from the hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence.”
This reflects human society and what is happening in it. It also seems to refer to Lily's mother.
