Sue Monk Kidd was born in Sylvester, Georgia. Her inspiration growing up was her father who told her stories throughout her childhood. She has enjoyed writing since high school but never believed she could pursue it as a career. She majored in nursing and graduated from Texas Christian University. She spent a majority of her twenties as a nurse on a surgical pediatric ward. during this time she married Sanford (Sandy) Kidd and together they had two children, Bob and Ann. She returned to writing in her early thirties and attended a writing class, before long she had a personal essay printed in the Readers Digest. To support her family she began to write personal experience articles, many were published in Guideposts Magazine.Her writing is influenced by a monk and poet, Thomas Merton, and Swiss psychiatrist, C G Jung.
She has written such books as; God's joyful surprise; When the heart waits; The dance of the dissident daughter. In 1997 she began to write The Secret Life of Bees, a task which took three and a half years. Since its publication the book has become a genuine literary phenomena. It has sold more than 4.5 million copies and spent over two years on the New York best seller list. Sue now lives near Charleston, South Carolina with her husband, Sandy and their Labrador, Lilly.
